The new Lexus IS F goes on sale in ten days time. It is the first production model to wear the new Lexus performance “F“ marque.
The new IS F is based on the robust IS sport saloon platform and will deliver 423 bhp from a specially engineered 5.0-liter V8 engine and will accelerate from 0 – 100km/h in 4.8 seconds. By combining this with the world’s fastest 8-speed Direct Sport Shift (DSS) transmission that shifts gear in just 0.1 of a second it is the fastest gear change outside of that found in a Formula 1 car.
The “F” marque from Lexus highlights the birthplace of the IS F, the Fuji Speedway located at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Founded in 1963, the Fuji speedway is now the highlight of the Formula 1 calendar.
The IS F began with the personal enthusiasm of two Japanese engineers for high performance. It had already led them to experiment with an older model IS300. The result of their work paid dividends when they were given the go-ahead for what had already become known internally as the ‘F’ project.
Lexus tells us that every aspect of the IS F has superior quality and integrity designed and engineered in. Lexus claim it is a unique performance car, but it is also a true drivers’ car. The IS F is expected to be under €110,000.
I hope to drive the new IS F at Mondello Park next week. I have already extensively tested both the new BMW M3, Audi S5 at the same venue, and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is also tried and tested. I'm looking forward to making a comparison with this Japanese challenger.
Lexus boasts of the superb handling, exceptional engine and transmission response of the new IS F. They tell us of the exhilarating sound from the V8 and a feeling of unlimited acceleration that this 5-litre power unit offers. Lexus says that it is one of the most sophisticated in the world and combined with the world’s fastest 8-speed Direct Sport Shift it delivers unprecedented shift speed for a production vehicle. This all whets the appetite to get into the driving seat. More on this later.
