The 300 horsepower, twin-turbocharged engine also scored best new engine honors. It shouldn't come as a big shocker that BMW's 3-liter twin turbo that powers its 335i variants, an engine that has been drawing raves around the world since its introduction, has been dubbed the 2007 International Engine of the Year.
The engine of the year title marks the third year in a row that the crew from Munich has won the top prize. In addition, BMW took home awards for its 2.5-liter inline six and its 5.0-liter V10 that powers the M5 and M6, and shared an honor with PSA for the 1.6-liter turbo that powers the Mini Cooper S.
While BMW ruled multiple categories, other winners included Toyota for its 1.5-liter hybrid engine which scored best fuel economy honors, and its 1-liter engine that powers the Toyota Aygo, among other vehicles.
The awards, which are independently judged by 62 automotive journalists from 30 countries,
were presented at Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany. Porsche took home an honor for the first time for its 3.6-liter turbocharged mill out of the 911 Turbo, and Volkswagen's 2.0-liter turbo and 1.4-liter Twincharger also scored top honors in their categories.
