Sales of such vehicles are heading downward due to high prices and Toyota's recalls.

Hybrid cars are powered by both a conventional internal combustion engine and an electric propulsion system.

They are touted as being eco-friendly and energy-efficient. According to the nation's automakers, Sunday, the number of these vehicles sold in February was 591, accounting for just 0.5 percent of the overall market, down from 0.6 percent in January.

Certainly the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid clears that bar, trouncing any other mid-size sedan with an EPA fuel economy rating of 41 mpg city, 36 mpg highway.

Camry Hybrid lags behind By comparison, the Toyota Camry Hybrid gets 33/34 mpg, and the Nissan Altima hybrid is rated at 35/33 mpg.

Geneva Auto Show: Pininfarina 2uettottanta

It’s a concept car from the Pininfarina design house, which has been responsible for styling many Ferraris and Alfa Romeos.

“This new concept car, in fact, interprets and evolves some of the strong themes of the Alfa Romeo-Pininfarina relationship and proves how.

A two-seater spider could evolve into the third millennium,” said Paolo Pininfarina, company chairman.

The engine is an Alfa-sourced 200-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, but a Pininfarina spokesman said the chassis is not borrowed from any existing Alfa. Like its fellow Italian design house Bertone Stile, Pininfarina would love for Alfa Romeo to write a fat check to put this lithe little sports car into production. But until that happens, don’t expect to see the 2uettottante in production.

On the heels of announcing a hybrid power train for the Proton car company, Lotus released details of its own hybrid Evora concept. The Evora is the latest model from Lotus, and is slightly larger car than its other models that retains the company's sport driving capabilities.

The Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid uses a newly developed series hybrid system, with an electric motor driving each rear wheel and a range extender internal combustion engine topping off the lithium polymer battery as needed. Similar to the upcoming series hybrid Chevy Volt, the Evora 414E Hybrid will be plug-in capable, so owners can charge the battery over night. On a full charge, the car can travel 35 miles before the range extender engine kicks in, giving it a full hybrid range of more than 300 miles.

Hamann Motorsport will officially unveil its 670hp/493kW strong and 300km/h fast Tycoon Evo M based on the BMW X6 M at the 80th Geneva Motor Show. The program includes a bodykit, performance upgrade, stainless steel exhaust system, wheel set and interior refinements.

The body kit holds front and rear wing extensions made of light composite materials. These let the body expand by 60 millimetres. The designers enhanced the sides with the newly designed side skirts. The distinctive hallmark of the front is the apron with the four striking LED daytime running lights. There are enlarged air inlets in the front and the carbon bonnet allows an optimised air ventilation of the engine compartment. At the X6 M rear, Hamann replaces the original skirt. This makes room for the earthy sounding sports exhaust system with the centrally positioned double end pipes. The rear view of the Tycoon Eveo M contains newly designed rear- and roof spoilers.

Geneva auto show - Mercedes-Benz F800 Style set for reveal

Offering a dual approach to a green future, the Mercedes-Benz F800 Style concept will be revealed next month at the Geneva auto show featuring striking sheetmetal and a slew of new driver technologies.

Mercedes is calling the F800 Style a research vehicle, and it's adaptable for a plug-in hybrid configuration or as a fuel cell. It's skinned it an eye-catching body with bold fenders and a prominent grille that hints at future styling directions for the German company.

The plug-in setup uses a V6 engine rated at 300 hp and a hybrid module that makes 109 hp, for a total output of 409 hp that works with a seven-speed automatic transmission. It uses lithium-ion batteries and has a range of 18 miles on electricity. Though it's an eco-friendly powertrain, Mercedes says it performs like a sports car with a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. In pure electric mode, it can reach a top speed of 75 mph.

Audi RS5 brochure images leaked!

A hot RS version of Audi’s sleek A5 coupe has been rumoured for long, and now we can confirm its existance and possible debut at next month’s Geneva show, thanks to these leaked brochure images.

Not much is known technically, but some parties have said that the RS5 will be powered by a naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 with around 450bhp and 450 Nm.

From these images, we can see that the RS5’s redline is set at about 8200 rpm, so we’re looking at a high revving screamer here. Also gathered from the brochure is the lack of a manual option; Audi’s S-tronic auto transmission is pictured here. Options will include three types of front seats and four wheel designs. But no flat bottomed steering wheel?
