When cruising in the 2010 Kia Soul around Chicagoland, onlookers broke into giggles, laughter and even a guffaw. The new 2009 Kia Borrego is a classic American-style mid-size sport-utility. Think Ford Explorer/Chevy Trailblazer. And also think, “My, what lousy timing. Just when gas prices have been going up…”

Not, of course, that Kia had much of a choice for its first mid-size SUV.. When the Borrego project was started from original design to engineering the factory assembly lines and initial roll-out can easily span four or five years the SUV market was still booming. The old phrase it-seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time comes to mind. But like the cowboy said when his horse had jumped ninety percent of the ravine and it looks doubtful about the rest, it’s too late to turn back now.

Asian automakers probably got a bigger sales boost than their U.S. rivals from vehicles introduced at the annual New York auto show.

New models from Asia included Nissan's latest Maxima, and the Fit small car and Acura TSX sports sedan from Honda. South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co. showed a two-door version of its Genesis premium car, while Toyota Motor Corp. had a coupe that may be added to its youth-oriented Scion brand.

Models from Kia Motors, Mazda and Subaru also drew raves.

The new-model count at the show mirrors the rising fortunes of the Asians in the Northeast, as well as the total U.S. market. Asian companies accounted for 10 of the 20 vehicles making their global or North American debuts, compared with two from U.S. automakers, according to the show's organizers. Eight of the new models were European makes.

''The New York show has lost some of the allure for U.S. brands that it once had,'' said George Magliano, a New York-based analyst for research firm Global Insight Inc. ''It's still the media capital, but the biggest introductions for them are in Detroit, Los Angeles and Geneva.''

Workers at Kia Motors Corp., an affiliate of South Korea's biggest carmaker, will resume partial strikes on Aug. 13, the first such action after they rejected a tentative agreement by union leaders.Employees will stop working for two hours in each of the day and night shifts on Aug. 13, while union representatives will hold negotiations with the company, the union said yesterday on its Web site.A majority of Kia workers on July 27 rejected a tentative pay deal for a 5.2 percent rise in base pay for this year, prolonging a dispute that has already cost the carmaker 299.7 billion won ($323 million) for 20,835 vehicles in lost production.Kia, South Korea's second-biggest automaker after its parent Hyundai Motor Co., reported a 63 percent drop in its first half net income because of lower vehicle sales.

A new model has been added by South Korean carmakers Kia. 

It is the first seven-seater car in the U.S. The Rondo is a tall wagon with spacious interior for families and couples. The new-for-2007 Kia Rondo is the first non-minivan Kia in the U.S. to offer seating for up to seven. South Korea's Kia joins the ranks of automakers offering flexible cargo space in a tallish wagon that handles like a car, not an SUV. The early Rondos won't have an iPod link, because officials said they were still working on getting that into the vehicle. The early Rondos also aren't MP3 capable, and the Rondo does not offer rear park assist, navigation system, garage and gate opener and all-wheel drive, which are usually available on the more SUV-oriented crossovers.
